Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store, a registry like database, consists of various parameters that help in starting the operating system. It controls all phases of the boot process. Furthermore, BCD file is used in Windows Vista, Windows 7 & above versions in place of the text-based boot.ini file. In BCD store, objects like boot manager, boot loader & other boot applications have their own GUID. Besides, these objects can be modified using inbuilt tool Bcdedit.exe.

In BIOS based installation, BCD is located on active partition as [active partition] BootBCD

In EFI (Extensible firmware interface) based installation, BCD file is located on EFI system partition as [EFI system partition]EFIMicrosoftBootBCD

1. Symptoms of the problem

When computer is powered up, the following error message appears:

2. Cause of the problem

The rest of this article refers to Windows 7, but all information below applies to Windows 10 as well.

BCD hive with status 0xC0000034 differs from BCD hive without status 0xC0000034 in one subtle detail: it has no entry (which is stored as raw BCD object with constant GUID <9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795>).

Raw BCD hive with status 0xC0000034:

3. How to fix status 0xC0000034

1) Download Emergency Boot Kit and deploy it to USB thumbdrive according to the instructions, then set up your BIOS to boot from USB thumbdrive. You need full version of Emergency Boot Kit to actually write changes to the disk, but it’s recommended to try demo version to make sure there are no hardware incompatibilities.

2) Boot into Emergency Boot Kit:

3) Run File Manager from the main menu:

4) Press Alt+F1 and choose your boot partition from the menu. In Windows 7 and Windows 8 boot partition has size about 100MB in size and «System Reserved» volume label. In Windows Vista separate boot partition does not exist, computer boots from system disk where Windows OS files are installed (use UP and DOWN arrow keys and ENTER to navigate the menu):

5) Now you need to enter either Boot folder (on BIOS-based computers) or EFIMicrosoftBoot (on UEFI-based computers). Only one of these folders exists on any particular computer, so choose whatever exists.
Press TAB to switch input focus to the left panel, then navigate folders using arrow keys UP and DOWN and ENTER. (This example shows entering Boot folder.)

6) List of files should appear on the left panel. BCD file should be in the list, BCD.LOG , BCD.LOG1 and BCD.LOG2 may also appear in the list. Navigate to those files using arrow keys, then select them INSERT key:

7) After selection:

8) Press F6. File rename dialog will pop up:

9) Type BCD_OLD.* on keyboard and press ENTER:

10) Make sure BCD files were renamed successfully to BCD_OLD files, then press F10 and ENTER keys to exit the Emergency Boot Kit File Manager:

11) Choose Mount & Boot Center in the main menu:

13) Enable checkbox (checkboxes) on the intersection of the bootloader and operating system (operating systems) it should load:

14) Mount & Boot Center should look like below. Press OK to commit changes (BCD registry hive and corresponding log will be created from scratch at this point):

15) «Status 0xC0000034» boot problem should be fixed now. Choose ‘Reboot’ in the main menu of Emergency Boot Kit:

Please note: Because BCD (Boot Configuration Data) was recreated from scratch, you may need to adjust boot timeout, menu order etc from within Windows when it boots successfully.

Shift+F10.

bcdboot c:windows

Step 2. Click Repair your computer at the left-bottom corner of Windows Setup.

Step 3. Click Troubleshoot and choose Advanced options, you can see multiple further options then.

Step 4. Click Command Prompt, type following commands and press Enter key after each.

Bootrec /fixmbr

Bootrec /fixboot

Bootrec /scanos

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Step 5. Type A at last to add the installation to the boot list, then press Enter.

Step 6. Now you can quit command prompt, and tap Continue to launch Windows 10.

2. Fix the issue with Startup Repair

Startup Repair is also a handy feature built into Windows. You can use it to fix some boot problems.

3. Create a bootable media easily if you don’t have any

This is a common situation in real life that you can’t find the installation CD when you actually need it. But since it’s the precondition to fix BCD missing in Windows 10 or Windows 8, you may need an effective alternative at first.

In my case, one of the easiest ways it to make a bootable disc by yourself, and the Create Bootable Media tool in AOMEI Backupper is a good choice. It’s totally free of charge, and the operation is pretty quick and simple.

First, you should find a working PC with Windows system. Download the freeware AOMEI Backupper Standard. It’s an all-around backup & restore program which can not only create bootable drive, but also solve many data related problems in Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP/Vista, such as creating system backup image and recovering it.

Secure Download

Step 1. Install and launch the software on that working Windows PC, click Home > Tools > Create Bootable Media.

Step 2. Make your choice from two disc types, the second one Windows PE is recommended since it provides more flexible and convenient operations than Linux bootable disc. Click Next to continue.

Step 3. If your system is installed on a GPT disk, you can choose from following options. Then hit Next button.

Step 4. Select a storage media as you want. Corresponding media should be connected to your computer successfully in advance. Click Next to start the process.

Step 5. Wait for the progress completes and pull out the disc or USB.

Step 6. Now you’ve got a bootable media. You can use it to boot the computer with corrupted BCD, following the steps in Method 1 or Method 2.

Normally you can keep the default selection in Step 3 (Create legacy bootable disc). The second option is designed to improve the compatibility of being used on multiple computers with different hardware configurations.

A CD-burning program is required if you want to use CD/DVD as bootable media.

4. Perform system backup in case of BCD missing or corruption

Now you’ve known how to fix Boot Configuration Data missing in Windows 10. The problem is, solving it once doesn’t mean it would never happen again.

As you know, Boot Configuration Data file is a part of system files. It is complicated and also vulnerable, which means you may encounter error 0xc0000034 as well as similar issues over and over.

To protect your computer better, you can make an image backup of the system when it’s in good condition or on a regular basis. Luckily, the operation can also be done with the software I mentioned earlier.

Step 1. Launch AOMEI Backupper Standard and click Backup > System Backup.

Step 2. The operation system will be automatically specified as the source. You just need to select a destination path. In addition to local disk, you can also backup system image to network drive/NAS, extertal hard drive, USB and so on for higher security. Alternately, you can also edit Task Name to make it easy to distinguish, or click Options, Schedule, Scheme to customize and optimize the backup. Then click Start Backup to begin.

Step 3. Wait till the process ends, click Finish to exit the wizard.

Step 4. Next time you encounter a system error, you can boot up Windows with the created bootable media, and restore your system to a point when there’s no such an error.

Incremental and differential backup are both available in this software, you can make the choice as you like. Note the scheduled differential backup can only be performed in AOMEI Backupper Professional and higher editions.

Options — it offers you multiple practical options to comment on the backup, choose backup mode, compress image, split image, etc. Some features in it (like backup encryption) are only available in advanced editions.

Schedule — here you can run the backup automatically on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Two more options are provided in advanced editions: Event triggers, USB plug in.

Scheme — it will delete older backups automatically with the rules you set to save the space. It’s only supported by advanced editions.

System Backup will only create an image of system partition. You can also perform other backup features such as file backup or partition backup to protect your important data.

lis dis (смотрим список имеющихся физических дисков)

sel dis 0 (выбираем жёсткий диск с системой)

lis par (команда выводит список разделов на выбранном жестком диске)

sel par 2 (выбираем раздел 2 — системный EFI раздел)

sel par 3 (выбираем раздел MSR)

del par override (удаляем раздел MSR)

format fs=fat32 (форматируем его в файловую систему FAT32).

creat par msr size=128 (создаём раздел MSR 128 Мб)

bcdboot C:Windows
